therapy?
One of my favorite quotes related to what comes up again and again in psychotherapy is, “It is no measure of health to be well-adjusted to a profoundly sick society,” which is something that Jiddu Krishnamurti said. So, although in this culture and in my psychotherapy practice many people come in hoping that I can help them become more “well-adjusted,” that is not my goal. In a culture that thinks of the individual person as the basic reference point, it can be difficult for any of us to realize that changing our individual selves cannot solve all that ails us—it cannot solve a lot of what ails us. And yet, the paradox is that so often if we do change ourselves it radically changes how we are experiencing ourselves and our relationships and our lives. This is one of the many paradoxes inside of which I live and work as a psychotherapist.
